Blueberry Matcha Latte Recipe (Antioxidant Boost)

A blueberry matcha latte combines two of the most antioxidant-rich ingredients in the kitchen into a single layered drink that is visually striking and genuinely nutritious. The deep purple of the blueberry base against the vivid green of the matcha creates a stunning colour contrast in a clear glass, and the flavour combination of sweet-tart blueberry, creamy milk, and earthy matcha is both refreshing and satisfying.

Why blueberry and matcha make sense together

Both blueberries and matcha are exceptional sources of antioxidants, though from different compound families. Matcha is rich in catechins, particularly EGCG. Blueberries are rich in anthocyanins, the pigments responsible for their deep blue-purple colour. These two antioxidant families work through different mechanisms and may complement each other in terms of protective effects. Beyond the nutritional logic, the flavour pairing works because the natural sweetness and mild tartness of blueberries balances the earthy bitterness of matcha in the same way that other fruit-forward layers do.

Ingredients

•      1 teaspoon matcha powder

•      60 ml warm water at 70 to 80 degrees Celsius

•      Half a cup of fresh or frozen blueberries

•      1 tablespoon honey

•      200 ml cold milk of your choice

•      Ice

Making the blueberry layer

Place the blueberries and honey in a small saucepan with a tablespoon of water. Cook over medium heat for three to four minutes, pressing the berries gently as they soften, until they burst and release their juice. Remove from heat and let cool. For a smoother sauce, push through a sieve. For a chunkier texture, leave it as is. The compote should be thick enough to sit in the bottom of the glass without immediately blending with the milk.

Assembling the drink

Sift the matcha into a small bowl and add the warm water. Whisk briskly in a W motion until smooth and frothy. Spoon the cooled blueberry compote into the bottom of a tall clear glass. Add ice on top of the blueberry layer. Pour in the cold milk slowly. Finally, pour the whisked matcha over the back of a spoon to create the green layer on top. The three layers, purple blueberry at the bottom, white milk in the middle, and green matcha on top, create a visually striking drink. Stir before drinking.

Variations

Frozen blueberries work equally well and produce a slightly more concentrated, almost jammy compote. Adding a small squeeze of lemon juice to the blueberry layer brightens the flavour and enhances the purple colour. A sprig of fresh mint tucked into the glass before serving adds a refreshing aromatic note.

Common questions

Can I use blueberry jam instead of making the compote?  Yes. Use a high-fruit-content jam with no added colour or artificial flavouring. The flavour will be sweeter, so reduce any additional sweetener accordingly.

Will the anthocyanins in blueberries interact with the matcha?  No negative interaction. Both sets of antioxidants function independently and there is no reason to avoid combining them.

Does the blueberry layer change the caffeine content?  No. The caffeine comes entirely from the matcha powder, not from the blueberries.
