It is present in higher concentrations in matcha than in virtually any other dietary source, and the range of health effects it has been studied for is unusually broad. What EGCG is
EGCG is a catechin, a type of
flavonoid polyphenol, which is a class of plant compounds that act as powerful
antioxidants. It is found in tea plants, Camellia sinensis, with particularly
high concentrations in green tea because the minimal processing of green tea
leaves preserves the catechins that would be converted to other compounds
during the fermentation used to make black tea. Matcha, because it is consumed
as a whole powdered leaf rather than a steeped infusion, delivers EGCG in
higher concentrations per cup than any other tea preparation.
How antioxidants work
Antioxidants work by
neutralising free radicals, which are unstable molecules that have an unpaired
electron. Free radicals are produced naturally during metabolism, and in higher
quantities by UV exposure, pollution, smoking, and stress. When free radicals
react with cell components including DNA, proteins, and lipids, they cause
oxidative damage. This damage accumulates over time and is associated with
aging, inflammation, and the development of chronic diseases. Antioxidants like
EGCG donate an electron to the free radical without becoming unstable
themselves, neutralising the reactive molecule and stopping the chain reaction
of damage.
What the research shows about EGCG
EGCG has been studied
extensively across a range of health contexts. The most consistent and
well-supported evidence points to anti-inflammatory action, with EGCG
inhibiting multiple inflammatory signalling pathways in cell and animal
research and in some human trials. Cardiovascular protection evidence includes
reduced LDL oxidation, which is a key step in arterial plaque formation.
Metabolic effects include a modest increase in fat oxidation and a small
thermogenic effect. Skin protection evidence includes reduced UV-induced DNA
damage in skin cells and improved skin elasticity in some clinical trials.
Research into EGCG and cancer
prevention is ongoing and shows some promising results in laboratory settings,
but the evidence in humans is much less definitive. It is important not to
overstate this area of research. Matcha is a healthy beverage with genuine
health-supporting properties. Claiming it prevents or treats cancer goes well
beyond what current evidence supports.
Getting EGCG from matcha vs supplements
EGCG supplements are available
but matcha provides EGCG alongside a range of other catechins, L-theanine,
chlorophyll, vitamins, and other compounds that may work synergistically. There
is reasonable scientific rationale for the idea that whole food sources of
polyphenols work better than isolated supplements, though this is difficult to
test rigorously. For most people, drinking matcha daily is a more enjoyable and
sustainable way to get EGCG than taking supplements.

How much EGCG is in a cup of
matcha? Estimates vary by grade and
preparation, but a typical cup of matcha prepared with one teaspoon of powder
contains approximately 70 to 130 mg of EGCG. This is significantly more than a
cup of steeped green tea.
Does heating matcha reduce
EGCG? Some degradation occurs at
very high temperatures, which is another reason to avoid boiling water. At 70
to 80 degrees Celsius the loss is modest. Drinking matcha at appropriate
preparation temperatures preserves most of its EGCG content.
Can I get too much EGCG from
matcha? Extremely high doses of
green tea extract, much higher than you would consume from drinking matcha,
have been associated with liver stress in some case reports. Normal matcha
consumption at one to two cups per day is well within safe limits for most
healthy adults.
