The chlorophyll in matcha, present in higher concentrations than in any steeped tea because of the shade-growing process, also has antioxidant properties and has been associated with supporting skin healing and detoxification in research contexts. Research on green tea polyphenols applied topically and consumed orally has found evidence of reduced ultraviolet-induced DNA damage, improved skin elasticity with consistent consumption, reduced fine lines and wrinkle depth in controlled trials with green tea extract supplementation, and protective effects against photoaging when green tea is consumed regularly alongside sun exposure.

Drinking vs applying matcha for anti-aging

Drinking matcha provides systemic antioxidant support from within, which benefits the entire body including the skin. Applying matcha topically as a mask or treatment delivers antioxidants directly to the skin surface, which is particularly relevant for surface-level damage from UV and pollution. Both approaches have their place and they are complementary rather than competing.

How long does it take to see anti-aging effects from matcha?  Antioxidant effects are cumulative and preventive rather than immediately reversible. Consistent consumption over months and years is where the meaningful benefit lies, more in what is prevented than what is reversed.
